Police officers stopped a car which was being driven erratically and found Oliver Harlington was over the limit.

The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court.

Procurator fiscal, Karen Smith, told the court the youth was caught driving across the white line in the middle of the road at Willowglen in Stornoway around 2.30am one Sunday morning.

He was found to have an alcohol reading of 115mg against the legal maximum of 50mg.

His lawyer said Harlington, of Carloway, Lewis, and a friend took the car into town earlier that night. He intended leaving the vehicle in town and for both of them to get a taxi home. However, the pair became separated over the evening and he “stupidly” decided to drive.

Sheriff David Sutherland banned the offshore worker for 12 months and imposed a £400 fine, discounted from £600 because of his early plea.
