A drink driver who crashed almost head-on into an oncoming car has appeared in court.

Angus Peter Joseph Macdonald clipped the roadside verge on the A865 road at Carinish, in North Uist, veered across the centreline of the road and smashed into a vehicle at lunchtime on 10 January.

The other driver was taken to hospital with slight injuries, Lochmaddy Sheriff Court was told.

Macdonald, 52, of Thoraigh, Carinish, pleaded guilty to drink drinking as well as careless driving.

Procurator fiscal Karen Smith told the court Macdonald was driving north on a sweeping bend at Carinish.

It was “virtually a head-on collision,” she highlighted.

Solicitor Gordon Seaton said Macdonald -  a salmon farm worker - was returning from Balivanich after going to buy cigarettes.

He “regrets making that journey now,” and was driving too quickly for the wet road surface.

His alcohol count of 44mcg - double the legal limit - was the result of “remnants of the night before,” added the lawyer.

Sheriff Chris Dickson fined him £565 and banned him from driving for a year, which would have been 18 months but for his early plea.
