Drink driver receives ten year ban                      7/11/14

A Lewis man has been fined £2000 and disqualified from driving for ten years after being caught drink driving.

Ian Macleod of 103 Newmarket, Lewis, was nearly four times the legal limit when he drove in Ullapool.

The 67-year-old steered his car along Shore Road and into the ferry carpark on 25 October.

A breath test showed he had 129mcg of alcohol in his system against the maximum limit of 35mcg.

Macleod, who pleaded guilty to the charge, appeared for sentencing at Stornoway Sheriff Court on Friday.

Sheriff David Sutherland said the fine would have been £3000 but for his early plea.

Macleod has to pay £1000 by next Friday while the rest can be in £40 per month instalments.

He was warned he would be jailed for 45 days if he defaults on repayments.

Macleod was ordered to resit the driving test before ever getting behind the wheel again after his disqualification is up in 2024.
