A drink driver from Harris has been disqualified for two years after he was caught following a tip-off to police.

Despite being nearly six times the legal limit, Donald John Mackay could not get a taxi home so drove his brother’s car instead on 19 June, Stornoway Sheriff Court has heard.

But, someone spotted him on the road between Tarbert and Cliasmol and called the police.

They soon arrived at his home and noted the bonnet of the vehicle was still warm.

He took a breathalyser test and was taken to the police station in Stornoway.

There, a further test - some hours after the incident - showed a reading of 127mcg against the legal maximum of 22mcg.

His lawyer said Mackay, 48, had no intention of driving but could not find  a taxi and “stupidly” got behind the wheel.

Mackay of 2 Cliasmol, Harris, pleaded guilty to drink driving as well as having no insurance.

Sheriff David Sutherland fined him a total of £1,000 to be paid in £50 weekly installments, on top of the 24 months driving ban.
