Drink driver                    2/9/14

An islander lost his job after been caught drink driving, Stornoway Sheriff Court has heard.

A driving licence was essential to Ian Macleod’s employment, his lawyer told the court.

Two police officers stop Macleod at 5.20pm on Wednesday, 6 August and discovered he had a high alcohol reading of 143mg against the legal maximum of 35mg.

Lawyer Angus Macdonald said his client “very much realises the stupidity of what he has done.”

He said it was an one-off situation with Macleod having a drink the night before he returned to work after the holidays and then “stupidly drank more alcohol.”

Due to the high reading, Sheriff David Sutherland imposed a 12 month community payback order to include 120 hours of unpaid community service work.

In addition, Macleod was banned from driving for two years.
