A disabled deep sea trawler has been towed 150 miles to safety after breaking down in a force eight gale off the Hebrides.

Engine problems left the French fishing boat MFV Julien Coléou - with eight crew onboard -  without power some 20 miles west of Barra Head, said coastguards.

A sister vessel from the same fleet - MFV Jean-Claude Coulon II - successfully got a line across to the drifting boat and took her under tow.

A force eight gale and a rolling swell hamper progress.

The pair steamed at reduced speed, heading for Lochinver - a regular port of call for the vessels.

The tow arrived in the port this morning, over 24 hours after the emergency began.

Both vessels belong to the Scapêche fleet, the largest fishing boat owner in France. They work grounds in the Atlantic Ocean just to the west of the Western Isles. Catches are landed on the north west coast and despatched by truck to French supermarkets.
