Police Scotland in the Highlands and Islands are targeting bogus callers as the force renews its commitment to crack down on doorstep criminals.

Doorstep crime affects some of the most vulnerable members of our society, with perpetrators mainly targeting victims due to a perceived vulnerability, such as age, gender or disability.

Victims are targeted by bogus callers, rogue workers or plausible sales people who sometimes demand large amounts of money, often way above the value of any work they claim to be carrying out. Frequently isolated, and pressured into paying, these victims are often driven to the bank, building society or post office to withdraw cash on demand. Many become repeat victims.

Angela Parker, national manager of independent charity Crimestoppers Scotland, said: "Crime stoppers is backing Police Scotland’s Doorstep Crime Campaign.

"Many victims are elderly and vulnerable and the impact of this crime can be devastating to their lives and their family.

"We would urge anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers anonymously. We don’t trace or record calls and you won’t have to make a statement, be a witness or go to court – just tell us what you know, not who you are. No-one will ever know you called. Call 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org."
