A diver suspected to be suffering from the bends was airlifted from the Western Isles at the weekend.

The casualty was diving in the sea near Tarbert, Harris, when he appeared to have fallen ill with decompression sickness on Friday.

He was one of a group of divers on the chartered vessel, the Gaelic Rose, a converted fishing boat which has been in the area for some weeks.

The vessel headed for Tarbert, intending to take the man ashore to the GP surgery. Stornoway coastguards were alerted and medical advice obtained from Aberdeen.

The Stornoway coastguard helicopter flew the casualty to Oban and he received treatment at the hyperbaric chamber at Dunstaffnage.
