The coastguard station in Stornoway has arranged a marine flares amnesty for the end of the month.

The base will be open from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 30th April to accept out-of-date or unwanted flares.

The types of pyrotechnics which can be handed in are para flares, handheld flares, handheld smoke, Lifesmokes, smoke generators, man overboard markers, Speedlines, maroons, mini flare packs and signal pistol cartridges.

Flares from commercial organisations or fishing boats cannot be accepted - just pyrotechnics from private individuals and leisure boat users.

A coastguard spokesman said: "We don’t have a problem with anyone just turning up but it would be highly useful to us if anyone bringing in flares could ‘phone beforehand on 01851 702013 just to advise their expected time at the station and advise what they’re bringing."

Since 2005 it has been an offence to dump pyrotechnics in household rubbish, garden waste or public litter bins

It is also unlawful to dump them at sea or set them off either testing purposes, practice or as fireworks.

Neither should they be abandoned at coastguard, RNLI or police stations.
