Diminished service on Sound of Harris ferry route
31 May 2025
Ferry travel on the Sound of Harris route is restricted for as a smaller vessel has
taken over the service while the regular vessel is undergoing repairs.
Vehicle space on the route seems impossible to secure over the duration with all
sailings showing as booked while the Loch Portain is shifted off route to undertake
works on her propulsion unit.
The peak summer timetable with increased sailings from today to provide additional
capacity has been suspended for the moment.
The Portain was due to operate an extra sailing every second day over the week as
demand for travel on the service ramps up.
Relief vessel, MV Loch Bhrusda is smaller and slower, and can only carry up to 18
cars, nearly half the figure of the Portain.
