The Western Isles Labour party has voiced its opposition to axing the present dentists’ surgeries in Uist.

Islanders are fiercely opposed to the plan to have a centralised surgery within the Balivanich hospital.

Patients face round trips of up to 60 miles to see the nearest dentist if clinics in Lochmaddy and Liniclate shut. The Lochboisdale was closed with little notice last year.

The Western Isles integrated joint board was evenly split on a motion not to proceed with the hub model.

Now it is up to for the chief executives of the comhairle and NHS Western Isles to come to a joint final decision.

The Western Isles Constituency Labour Party said there should be three sites across Uist - a move overwhelmingly supported by islanders, local groups and community councils.

A spokesman said the local party calls on the local Integrated Joint Board to “heed the unanimous opinion” of consultees about dental provision across the Uists and the Scottish Government to adequately fund the NHS to “meet the clearly demonstrated needs” and non-party political decisions of islands’ communities.

Any other decision of the IJB would be a contradiction of its own policy statements that ‘Your Views Matter,’ he added.
