Western Isles children have much better dental health compared to the recent past.

The islands used to be one of the worst areas for tooth decay.

New figures show that 82.8% of P7 pupils have no obvious tooth decay - the 2nd best figure in Scotland

Some eight years ago just under half of the same age group had teeth problems.

The government-funded Childsmile scheme, which aims to improve the oral health of children across the country, has been beneficial, said the islands health board.

John Lyon, chief administrative dental officer, said: “It’s really good news. The level of dental disease has significantly decreased since reports on primary school children started in 2003.

"It is a significant improvement in oral health. We have no doubt that the Childsmile programme is certainly contributing to this improvement.”
