A number of hardy people are signing up to take a chilly dip in the freezing sea in a bid to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland Lewis and Harris.

All are welcomed to take part in the dementia dip being held at Gress beach on January 1.

The money raised will be put towards the running costs of dementia cafes in the local area.

Dementia cafes give people with dementia and their carers the opportunity to meet up, get advice and information from trained staff.

Marion MacInnes, service manager, Alzheimer Scotland said: “I am looking forward to taking the plunge for what will be the second year of this event.

“This challenge is a fantastic way to start the year.

“This is a great experience and an excellent way to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland as we want to make sure that nobody faces the challenge of dementia alone.”

Registration is £5 and participants are asked to aim to raise £50 in sponsorship.

If you want to register an interest and take part in the fun please contact mmacinnes@alzscot.org or leave your details on 01851 702123.

Alzheimer Scotland also operate a 24 hour Dementia Helpline Freephone 0808 808 3000. It also offers advice at www.alzscot.org

Dementia affects 88,000 people in Scotland.

Alzheimer’s disease is the main form of dementia. The second most common is vascular dementia. As yet there is no cure.
