There is ‘significant demand’ for improved air services between Stornoway and Aberdeen, shows a new report.

At present there is just one lunchtime flight which is unsuitable for oil workers.

Respondents to a Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) survey said a morning and an evening flight were required.

It found the greatest demand is among Lewis and Harris residents, as well as offshore workers living in the Western Isles.

Island councillor Donald Crichton urged airline Eastern Airways to put on two flights a day at suitable times.

Mr Crichton said: “I hope they delay no further and implement a proper service - which would bring huge economic benefits to both Aberdeen and Stornoway.

He highlighted that later timed flights would be better for offshore workers and also encourage more employment and economic opportunities for the islands.

Eastern Airways commercial director, Kay Ryan, commented: “We welcome the feedback from the Outer Hebrides survey and continue to evaluate an enhancement to the route in line with aircraft availability and forecasted passenger demand.”
