Sir,

After reading the apologia from David Wilson, I am unable to find a shred of evidence to support his claims about Angus Brendan MacNeil’s parliamentary activities. They certainly aren’t in Hansard. In particular, I think most people will laugh at Wilson’s claim that MacNeil “embarrassed” Danny Alexander into introducing the 5p fuel discount. What does he base that boast on? The only people Mr MacNeil specialises in embarrassing are his own constituents.

Last week, he was forced to delete a tweet about the young woman who, during the televised STV debate, had the temerity to say that, having heard the arguments, she would be voting Labour. The young woman was then subjected to torrents of online abuse including a false allegation that she was a Labour activist. When this proved to be completely untrue, it emerged that two prominent SNP politicians had spread the story via social media. It will have surprised nobody that one of them was Angus Brendan MacNeil.

Once again, the people of the Western Isles have to ask themselves if this is the kind of person and behaviour they want to be represented by. The young woman was quoted as saying: “I’ve de-activated my Facebook because I just can’t take any more abuse. I haven’t eaten and I haven’t slept”. Mr Wilson must be very proud of the individual he is obliged to make excuses for.
