Plans have been pushed back by two days to reopen the revamped A&E department at Western Isles Hospital.

Final works and checks means the unit cannot accept patients on Monday as previously arranged said the health board.

Patients will continue to be treated in the current temporary set-up within the hospital until A&E becomes operational on the Wednesday.

In addition, the Acute Assessment Unit - which was shifted to accommodate the temporary emergency department remains in the day surgery unit on level two until it moves back to its original location on 9 June.

The new state-of-the-art new emergency department involved a £1 million investment over 13 weeks of refurbishment work.

The work has resulted in improved availability of clinical space and has increased the number of resuscitation spaces from one to three. One of the resuscitation spaces is dual purpose and can be used as two treatment rooms.

A modern ventilation system has been installed in the department, which ensures 10 air changes per hour.

A new nurse call system aims improves safety and patient care.
