Death of former Stornoway town clerk         4/1/12

Murdoch Macleod, a former town clerk of Stornoway and general manager of Stornoway Pier and Harbour Commmission, who had a distinguished career in serving his local community and further afield, has died aged 79. He passed away in the Western Isles Hospital where he had been admitted with pneumonia.

He was born in Shawbost on the west side of the island and educated there and other schools before going to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway and later to Skerry's College in Edinburgh.

After working for contractors at Aird, Uig, the site of the RAF camp, he was employed with Ross and Cromarty County Council in their Highways Department and Education Department. He entered the Stornoway Town Clerk's office in 1965 and was Town Clerk from 1968 - 75.

He became General Manager of Stornoway Pier and Harbour Commission in 1975 and retired from the post in 1996. He was a chairman of the Small Ports Members of the British Ports Association and later First Deputy Chairman of the British Ports Federation from 1987-88 as well as a member of the Council of the BPA.

A JP, he was chairman of the District Courts Association of Scotland from 1983-85 and was also a respected Hon. Sheriff at Stornoway.

He also served as chairman of the Western Isles branch of NALGO, and was a former chairman of the Lewis and Harris Licensing Board. For 12 years he served as a member of the Western Isles Health Board, and was a member of the General Advisory Council of the Independent Broadcasting Authority. For 14 years he was a member of the Transport Users Consultative Committee finishing as Deputy Chairman of Shipping Services. He was awarded the MBE in 1989.

Mr Macleod's other interests included drama and he was chairman of the Lewis District of the Scottish Community Drama Association. He took a keen interest in the work of the Friends of the Western Isles Hospital and was chairman of that body.

From 1960 - 69 he was secretary of the Stornoway YMCA and he was also a director of the Western Isles Development Fund.

He was President of Stornoway Rotary Club from 1979-80 and was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 2000.

Mr Macleod is survived by his wife Crisybil and a son and a daughter. The funeral will take place on Friday from St Columba's Church in Stornoway and then to Sandwick Cemetery.
