Councillor Iain Morrison from Barvas, Lewis, has died aged 60 years.

The popular councillor - known locally as Iain a' Bhilichean - represented the Westside and Ness ward.

He died on Friday after fighting cancer for over a year

Despite his illness, Mr Morrison was determined to continue to oppose a council drive to shut schools in his ward.

In recent months, he took a break from chemotherapy treatment in hospital in Aberdeen to vote against shutting Lionel secondary school in Ness via a video link though the final decision went for closure.

He was a director of family firm Galson Motors which operates school and service bus services in the community.

He also drove tour coaches taking tourists around the islands’ sightseeing attractions.

Mr Morrison’s maintained his mischievous sense of humour and positive upbeat attitude throughout his cancer treatment.

In his younger years, he was a keen footballer, playing in goals for Westside.

He had also turned out for Ness FC and for Stornoway United.

Mr Morrison was on the committee of the Eilean an Fhraoich football competition which organises a hotly contested inter-village tournament.

As a mark of respect the local West Side FC v United FC football match due to be held in his home district of Barvas was postponed on Friday evening.

A minute silence was held at the Ness v Stornoway Aths game at the weekend. Mr Morrison’s bus firm has sponsored Ness FC for the past 30 years.

Monday's match between Westside and Carloway has also been called off.

Mr Morrison was the chairman of the Western Isles Island Games Association - formed to enable local athletes to participate in the biennial International Island Games -  from 2005 until last year.
