A Western Isles councillor has died following a short illness.

 

Kenneth Murray, from Shawbost, died early on Tuesday morning at the age of 64 years.

 

Mr Murray represented the West Side and Ness ward on Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

 

It is understood he took very ill in recent days.

 

Mr Murray worked at the Shawbost Mill as director for 37 years.

 

He first became a councillor in 2007 and was re-elected to Comhairle in 2012.

 

For the past two years he was chairman of Environment and Protective Services Committee which also oversees planning applications.

Convener Norman Macdonald said: “Kenny was a good man and was a very active participant in all of the Comhairle’s processes.

 

“A keen sportsman, he also made a significant contribution through his involvement with Camanachd Leòdhais and the Lewis and Harris Sports Council over many years.

 

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Annette, his extended family and friends”
