Well known island businessman and entrepreneur, Colin "Ossan" Macaskill, has died.

Mr Macaskill who had been in ill health for some time died on Tuesday aged 80 years.

He founded a haulage firm which expanded into a large island transport company running lorries from the Hebrides to the continent.

Macaskill Haulage enjoyed unprecedented success with the growth of the salmon farming industry, specialising in transporting refrigerated fish from the Western Isles to Spain and France.

It transported return loads back to the UK and goods for Co-op stores to the Western Isles.

In addition to a base in Lochcarnan, South Uist, the business had four depots across Scotland when he sold it in 2001.  

Mr Macaskill also launched other enterprises, including setting up a petrol station, a homeware and furniture store as well as a coal merchants.

A wake will be held in Stornoway Free Church Seminary at 9pm on Thursday. The funeral service begins at 11.30am in the same church on Friday with the lift at noon for burial at Sandwick.
