Well known island farmer and butcher, Charles Macleod has died, aged 67 years.

Mr Macleod, known locally as Charlie Barley, passed away on Friday.

He was a well respected stockman who ran cattle and sheep on the family farm at Crobeag in Lochs.

The farm supplied their butcher's shop - famed for its Stornoway blackpuddings - set up by his father, also called Charles, in 1947 at Ropework Park at the bottom of Matheson Road in Stornoway.

Since 1999, he suffered from Parkinson’s disease which gradually reduced his mobility, forcing the decision to sell the 365 acre farm three years ago.

He regularly won prizes at local shows for his animals and was often asked to judge livestock competitions, both on the island and mainland.

Mr Macleod and his wife Julia raised their family in Steinish, by Stornoway.

Two of their daughters, Ria and Shona,  who were involved in a successful campaign to secure legal status for Stornoway black pudding, protecting the five butchers in the area from copy cat versions. Their eldest Lorna lives in Inverness.

A wake is being held in Martin's Memorial church at 9pm on Sunday evening.

The funeral service takes place in Martin's at 2.15pm on Monday with the lift at 3pm to Sandwick cemetery.
