Island charity fundraiser Kay Mackay has died.

Mrs Mackay who served 35 years with the Lewis branch of Cancer Research UK passed away in the early hours of this morning.

Mrs Mackay, from Matheson Road, Stornoway, joined the fundraising committee in 1980.

She took on the role as chairperson after retiring as infection control specialist nurse at the Western Isles Hospital in the 1990s.

Recently she was awarded a MBE for her work in the Queen’s New Year honours.

Thanks to her leadership and passion for the cause, the group now raises more than any other Cancer Research UK committee in Scotland.

Under her leadership they increased their annual fundraising from £2,000 in the 1980s to over £70,000 in 2014.

The committee’s total contribution to Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research totals over £1 million.

Mrs Mackay is survived by her husband Jackie, their twin sons Gregor and Roger and her brother Malcolm.
