Darts champion killed in car crash      1/3/14

A top darts player has been killed in a two-vehicle crash in Lochaber.

The dead man was named as Bryan Whyte - the reigning Western Isles darts champion.

Mr Whyte died in the collision which occurred around 2.40pm on Friday on the A82 between Spean Bridge and Fort William.

The 34-year-old was driving a car which was involved in a collision with a Ford transit pick-up.

The pick-up driver was taken to Belford Hospital in Fort William but is understood not to be seriously injured.

Mr Whyte worked as a HGV mechanic and lived in Spean Bridge. He regularly travelled to darts tournaments and clinched the Western Isles Open championship less than four weeks ago. He has won the islands’ top title in previous years.

He was also selected to represent Scotland and is the current holder of the Buckie Open in addition to competing in Wales, Germany and the Isle of Man.

He regularly played in the top league in Inverness and for various teams in the Highlands.

Jim MacNeil of the Highland Darts Association said: “In all the teams that Bryan played for his humour, honesty and integrity shone through and he endeared himself to everyone he met. He has been taken from us far too early but will always remain in our hearts. We will never forget him.”
