Bike lockers have been installed in Stornoway and Lionacleit  to encourage people to cycle to work more.

The storage units - based at the sports centres in both locations - will be rented on a ‘peppercorn’ annual rent – provide users regularly take their bike to work.

Council employees using the lockers can gain a tax incentive to purchase a bike through the ‘Cycle To Work’ scheme.

Ten lockers are available in Stornoway with three at Lionacleit.

Interest will be gauged over the coming weeks and any spare units will be made available for use by the general public.

Alison MacCorquodale, from the Comhairle’s Development Department, who was integral in securing funding for the project, said: “Cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine and as well as the health benefits, it can save you money and helps the environment.

“Knowing there is somewhere secure and dry to store your equipment will hopefully encourage people to start cycling to work and build up their confidence to make longer trips by bike.”
