The maritime emergency services were called into action to evacuate a casualty off a cruise liner at Stornoway this morning.

The woman had fallen and was believed to have broken her hip.

Stornoway coastguard helicopter airlifted a winchman onto the MV Azores to assess her injury around 9am.

The 16,000 tonne vessel anchored in Sandwick Bay and the Stornoway lifeboat went alongside.

Two RNLI crew boarded the cruise ship to assist the coastguard paramedic.

The casualty was carefully stretchered onto the RNLI lifeboat and landed at Stornoway ferry terminal.

Coastguard volunteers helped get the woman ashore and into a waiting ambulance.

The casualty is being treated at Western Isles Hospital. There is no word on her condition.

The Portuguese-flagged MV Azores is on a round-Britain cruise with mainly UK travellers.
