Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s vice-chair of sustainable development, Donald Crichton, has written to Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Richard Lochead MSP, expressing concern at subsidy payments delays crofters are experiencing.

Cllr Crichton said: “Crofting agriculture is experiencing severe hardship after a long wet summer in 2015 followed by a wet winter. This is on top of a disappointing return on store prices at the end of last season with prices down for both cattle and sheep.

"Crofters have been left unsure of the payments that they are entitled to and many, if not most, have had no payments at all despite having been promised that payments would commence before Christmas."

He said the added uncertainties over the final value of payments are "affecting crofters severely."

Payments should be processed as quickly as possible with advance notice of the value given to individual crofters, he urged.
