Crofters’ election 8/1/12
The official notice for the first crofters’ elections has been published. Six people will be elected by public vote to represent crofters on the new Crofting Commission.
The elections will be conducted using a postal ballot with ballot papers being issued on February 27 and the count taking place in Inverness at The Highland Council Headquarters on Friday March 16.
The deadline for returning candidate nomination papers and application papers for proxy and absent votes is Thursday January 26.
The official change from the current Crofters Commission to the Crofting Commission will then come into effect on April 1, 2012.
Three spaces on the incoming commission have been directly filled by the Scottish Government.
Susan Walker, a crofter from Skye; vet and HIE board member William Swann; and investment manager and crofting estate landlord Sandy Cross are appointed for five years with a £7,440 salary for working four days per month.
