The Comhairle is wrong to state the Scottish Government intends to slash the croft house improvement grant, insists a government spokesperson.

The council incorrectly maintained the funding to upgrade crofters homes were to be cut “substantially,” by an alleged 50% reduction.

However, the Scottish Government points out it actually seeks to increase the rate by around 30%.

It is consulting on raising the maximum level up to £28,000 in an island area and up to £23,000 in mainland crofting areas.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “In both cases the proposal represents an increase in the maximum level of grant assistance currently available, and we will be clarifying this with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.”
