Crew shortages hitting fishing industry

17 February 2017

But UK Immigration present difficulties in recruiting skilled workers.

Isles MP Angus MacNeil says UK immigration minister, Robert Goodwill, must implement his commitment to address the issue.

Mr MacNeil said: “We are now in mid-February and the fishing industry need to know what is happening in order to plan for the months ahead.

“It is the UK Government who control this alone, not the EU and sadly not Scotland or else we would have no problem.

“The crew shortage problem has not gone away and I am seeking an update from the minister on progress made.

“Make no mistake, this is about Scottish jobs, the UK Government should be doing all it can to support the Scottish industry.

The UK Government has been urged to speed up its pledge towards re-introducing a scheme to address the crew shortage crisis facing the west coast fishing industry.

A number of Western Isles trawlers have been forced to tie up after finding it impossible to source personnel.

Younger islanders are no longer attracted to the work and the local fishing industry is forced to look abroad for crews.
