Crew on MV Loch Seaforth found an innovative way to support underprivileged children – donating cash from scrap metal.

They recently replaced 16 trestles onboard, essential for securing trailers during freight transport, as these had come to the end of their service life.

Normally these would be destined for landfill, however, after discussions between the crew and Kevin Peach, harbour master at Ullapool Harbour, it was agreed that the trestles could be disposed of via a local scrap merchant instead.

The metal was valued at £390, which has now been donated on behalf of MV Loch Seaforth and Ullapool Harbour Authority to Gino’s Cantina – an orphanage in Transylvania which supports underprivileged children.

The Ullapool community regularly comes together to support Gino’s Cantina, as its creation was inspired by the town’s children after a visit from founder Gino. He recognised the impact of good nutrition on children and vowed to provide healthy meals for children in need in his hometown – resulting in the creation of Gino’s Cantina.

It costs around £1 per day to feed a child, so this donation will provide over a year of meals for a child there.

A CalMac spokeswoman said: “The crew are delighted to have been able to contribute to this cause and we hope that this story can inspire others to think outside the box when it comes to supporting the communities we live and work in.”
