Hebrides News

Divers are carrying out underwater inspections of the MV Hebrides which crashed in Lochmaddy harbour.

Damage is feared to the Cal Mac ferry's bottom, lower hull, propellers and rudders after she scraped the rocky seabed and ran aground near the shoreline.

The vessel also destroyed pontoons after colliding into Lochmaddy Marina.

Divers will check if her propellers were damaged when churching up pontoons when the vessel went astern to free herself from the shore.

The ship also smacked the pier.

A "technical fault" meant the vessel failed to slow down as she approached the berth.

A Cal Mac spokesperson said: "A technical failure led to an inability to decrease speed commensurate with the normal berthing procedure.

"The vessel struck pontoons at Lochmaddy Marina and made contact with rocks on the seabed as she came to a halt.

"No one was injured and the vessel berthed under her own power at the pier in Lochmaddy, where she remains alongside."

"A team of divers is on site at Lochmaddy today and has begun thorough investigations of the hull below the waterline.

"Appropriate action will then be taken based on the outcome of these investigations.

"The company is also working with the Lochmaddy Marina owners regarding the damage to the pontoons."

A team from Western Isles company, Lochs Divers, are continuing inspections of the vessel.

The ferry and the pier are presently out of action.

Travellers to Uist are being diverted via Stornoway or Mallaig.
