Council salaries 23/2/12
Sirs,
So the bad news is that some poor sod employed by our council is going to get the chop, this should never have happened. When Neil Galbraith left the council left a tight ship that with staffing levels that the council could deliver the services that it was supposed to do.
When the present CEO arrived all caution was thrown to the wind, every week pages of jobs were advertised in all papers, the reason for this that the CEOs and directors is set by responsibility,ie the more bodies the bigger the pay and pension entitlements.
Now since the council has shed so many jobs has the CEO and directors pay and pension benefits been adjusted?
If this has happened it will be a big saving for the Council. It has been years since I was a councillor but at one time the top officials pay was set by the population.
Now, how many councillors have even bothered to ask about pay structures or how a job attracts a salary, for instance,a clerical worker, say gets £20k a year, whereas a engineer gets £50k year, they are both doing important jobs, who sets the pay?
Do the councillors debate the pay rates that the council can afford or is it the employee that set the rate ie. we will not work for less than £sum.
Who sets the councillors’ pay. Do they get more if they attend the meetings, some don’t bother to attend, they sit in front of a telly watching the procedure,so these persons get the same pay as the diligent ones that never miss a meeting?
Does the Scottish Government monitor councils to see that they are running on a true course and that they are not over staffing?
