With only one week to go until the deadline to register to vote in the council elections, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is urging residents to make sure they are registered in time.

On Thursday 4 May voters in the Western Isles will go to the polls for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Local Government elections. The deadline to register to vote is Monday 17 April.

Anyone not registered to vote at their current address can register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote

Malcolm Burr, returning officer for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, said:  “Time is running out to make sure you can take part in the elections Thursday 4 May.

“These elections are an opportunity to have a say on who represents local people on issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar area. But if you’re not registered by 17 April, you won’t be able to vote.”

Andy O’Neill, head of the Electoral Commission in Scotland, said: “Our research shows that over a quarter of people in Scotland think that if you are old enough to vote then you are automatically registered, but in fact everyone must register themselves individually.”
