 Local Services

Hebrides News

This afternoon is the deadline for people to make their views known about the range of service cuts proposed by the Comhairle.

Islanders are asked to give their views on cutting around £2.5 million of services.

The feedback will be used when councillors make a final vote in February.

Some 84 council jobs could be lost under the plan.

But that figure could double by the impact in the wider local economy, it is feared.

In the firing line is the use of all itinerant teachers in island primary schools, the council-run Stornoway abattoir, and the Stornoway library coffee shop.

Saving £350,000 by placing all children currently in residential care at the Action for Children-operated Hillcrest care home in Stornoway into foster care.

Some 28 jobs at the facility are at risk while a further 24 posts may be also affected if the knock-on effect makes the associated Action for Children service at Bayhead, Stornoway, unsustainable.

It also means  the respite care service available at the home would be axed. Affected families are angry as say respite care is a very valuable service as it provides temporary relief, perhaps even for one night to families who are caring for a child and helps them cope the rest of the time.

Proposals also including looking at bus services and fares.

More expensive car parking charges in Stornoway town centre is being considered as well as extending charging for the fishermen's carpark in Stornoway.

Halving the £80,000 funding to The Energy Advisory service risks increasing fuel poverty across the Western Isles with vulnerable households not getting on advice on energy efficiency and missing out on funding opportunities, indicates a council report.

Annual social grants to community councils could be cut by 50% to £500.

Small arts grants to groups and individuals could be "discontinued."

Union Unison has raised concerns the cuts face hitting important services for vulnerable groups.
