Islands faces £11.4 million of council cuts and savings 21/4/14
The Comhairle faces an £11.4 million deficit over the next three years, under latest
figures.
Early action to draw up a strategy of cuts and savings to tackle the financial crisis
is being proposed.
Job cuts are not ruled out though the council will seek to minimise the number of
compulsory redundancies, as far as possible .
A report to go before councillors this week recommends council chiefs devises a detailed
programme to identify cuts and efficiency savings, devise a workforce strategy plus
lay the ground work for a round of service cuts to cover up to March 2018.
The looming financial stringency follows two years of cuts to head off a £6 million
deficit.
Western Isles Council is already targetting jobs and services to make £2.4 million
of savings this year - after implementing £2 million of cuts in 2013. The final £1.1
million compensation payout for losing £23 million in the 1991 Bank of Credit and
Commerce International crash was used to reduce the deficit and is no longer available.
An estimated 200 plus council positions have vanished in the last three or so years
including early retirement, vacancies which are not filled as well as redundancies.
