The people of Barra, the Uists, Benbecula, Eriskay and Berneray have an opportunity
to elect councillors who will represent them properly at the Comhairle on 4th May.
The only councillor to put the community he represents before all else has been Donald
Manford. The remaining six have performed poorly. We only have to look at how they
voted to scrap lifeline flights for their community.
The Independent Labour Party were too busy playing party politics with the Scottish
Government and health board, while the others were completely out of their depth.
Simple arithmetic tells you the ranking system, which they did not question, was
weighted towards Lewis and Harris because they have more councillors.
When Donald Manford fought on to try and save the lifeline flights it was Stornoway
councillors Gordon Murray and Rae Mackenzie who supported him.
When you look at the Shetland and Orkney Islands, they not only protect internal
flights, but look to improve them. The question facing the people of the these Isles
is, can they really afford to return councillors in name only or elect other people
of the calibre of Donald Manford.
