The Comhairle has returned an unexpected "profit" for the last financial year.

A projected deficit of £1.49 million for 2015 has been turned around to an estimated £1.5 million surplus, according to a council financial report.

The improvement is due to council departments under spending their budgets by £930,000 and retaining contingency cash of £413,000.

Lower fuel prices has helped the education department, highlighted the report.

Some £124,000 allocated for small local projects remained untouched in councillors' discretionary ward priority fund.

The surplus will be carried forward to help ease this year's financial constraints.

Part of the sum - £15,000 - will go into a council fund to help stage the Royal National Mod in the Western Isles this autumn.
