The Western Isles Conservatives have welcomed the recent budget, the first Tory budget in nearly 20 years.

The local branch said it offered a "positive economic statement" for the islands.

Association chairman Ranald Fraser said: "This is a strong budget that sets out the important work of restoring the United Kingdom's public finances while ensuring that we as a nation live within our means."

He continued: "The government's freeze on fuel duty will be welcomed across the Western Isles along with the rise in the income tax personal allowance to £11,000 next year which will boost personal finances.

"Under this Conservative government, despite the international economic conditions, we are seeing our country's economy steadily growing and more jobs being created in contrast to our European neighbours.

"Greece is a timely reminder of what can happen when public expenditure spirals out of control."
