Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie McGrigor has opened the Western Isles Conservative Association's election campaign office on Point St, Stornoway.

It is believed to be the first time the Tories have set up a campaign shop for an island election.

Edinburgh financial services manager, Mark Brown (above), is fighting the Western Isles seat on the Conservative ticket.

The local party first stood a candidate in the Western Isles back in 1923.

Mr McGrigor said: “Many people of these islands agree with our Conservative principles even though they may not vote for us in large numbers.

“But there is a core Conservative vote here who deserve a hard working candidate who is going to reflect their opinion and represent them.”

He urged people not to vote tactically and said the Conservative government had achieved a lot in their term in power.

The MSP pointed out the Conservatives initiated the building of infrastructure links to island communities - such as Vatersay and Bernera causeways and the Scalpay bridge in addition to kick-starting the Gaelic TV industry.
