Western Isles Conservatives are considering fielding candidates for the local council.

Islanders will be voting for new councillors in just six months time and contesting the election will build on the progress the local party has achieved recently, the islands' branch of the Scottish Conservative was told at annual meeting.

The party secured the highest share of the votes in Western Isles since 1970 in May's Parliamentary elections and more islanders are joining the party.

Local party chairman Ranald Fraser, hoped that for the first time the association would be fielding council candidates.

Mr Fraser highlighted the association is enjoying a "very successful and encouraging time."

He was said it was a "great honour and a privilege" to have been selected as their candidate" for the past election.

He thanked office bearers, members and supporters throughout the Western Isles for their "hard work, loyalty and dedication," as well as people who donated towards the financing of the campaign.

The chairman believed the ethics of core values of conservatism, self-reliance, civic responsibility, enterprise and community cohesion that he focused on during the campaign are shared by the majority of islanders.

He is confident the local party would continue their adherence to such principles.

The association meets every two months with the next meeting scheduled for December when Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron will address the meeting.

A Burns Supper is planned on 3rd February 2017 while the Spring meeting is scheduled to take place in Tarbert.

Office Bearers elected for the year are: chairman, Ranald Fraser; vice-chairman, Donnie Macleod; secretary, Murdoch Graham; minute secretary Elizabeth Macphail; and treasurer, Peter Macleod.
