There are concerns for jobs at a fish smokehouse in South Uist.

Salmon farmer Loch Duart want to sell the facility which employs around seven full time staff plus seasonal personnel at Lochcarnan.

Rumours about the smokehouse winding down emerged some weeks ago.

Bosses held a meeting with employees in recent days.

Sales director Andrew Bing said plans for what he called a “form of community ownership” have fallen through.

He believes, “there is still potential for the smokehouse to be brought within the community.”

He added: “The ethics of Loch Duart, as a company, lead us to foster artisan business within remote communities and locations.

“Loch Duart is fully committed to business within the Hebrides and we are endeavouring to maintain the status of the smokehouse within the community.

“There are well-advanced negotiations involving interests within the community and supporting organisations.

“These are at a delicate stage and Loch Duart will revert with the confirmed position when it is established.”
