Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has announced a series of funding awards from its Community Capital Grant Fund (CCGF) to support four community economic development projects worth over £4.2 million.

 

Capital Grants totalling £281,500 were awarded to Great Bernera Community Development Trust, Keose Glebe Estate, North Harris Trust and Urras na Tursachan – levering in further external funding of nearly £4m.

 

Cllr Alasdair Macleod, chairman of the Comhairle’s sustainable development committee said: “In this, the sixth round of the Comhairle’s Community Capital Grant Fund, four projects which will deliver sustainability, increase visitor numbers, lever in considerable external funding and income for the areas in which they operate were approved.”

At Huisinish in the Isle of Harris, the main part of the project aims to redevelop the building to include accessible toilets, changing facilities and showers for campers and an indoor viewing area with interpretation, from which the North Harris Trust will base its outdoor activities.

 

Great Bernera Community Development Trust proposed the installation of a pontoon facility to encourage visiting yachts and to provide berthing for local boats - which will promote the creation of new business, develop marine tourism and provide social opportunities.

 

At Keose Glebe in Lochs, the funding will enable the community to purchase the crofting estate and foreshore on behalf of the community.

 

Urras na Tursachan in Calanais seeks to redevelop and extend the Calanais Visitor Centre. The new build element will house the cafe, kitchen, additional toilet facilities and storage The building will include a larger ‘Story of the Stones’ interpretation, gift shop and reception office area. The toilet facilities will be renovated to meet current standards.
