The Barvas Estate on Lewis is now owned by residents, some 12 years after a buyout was first mooted.

Despite its name, the 33,000 acre estate on the west side includes very little of the Barvas township.

The land stretches down through Brue, Arnol and Bragar, and also takes in much of Shawbost.

The boundaries run between the sites of the former cattle grids of Barvas and Shawbost.

The Scottish Land Fund provided £715,000 for the purchase which includes a salmon hatchery. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar also awarded funding.

The buyout excludes fishing rights. A feasibility study concluded this approach would allow a community-run body to run at a profit.

Community landlord, Urras Sgìre Oighreachd Bharabhais proposals for development in the first five years include setting up a 50kW wind turbine scheme, small scale woodland and a recycling facility.

In addition, it is planned to improve peat and machair roads.

Comhairle leader, Angus Campbell, said: “I congratulate the community of Barvas on what is a historic occasion for all concerned.

"I know that a great deal of work has been put in by the Barvas Estate Trust who have worked tirelessly to secure the funding needed.

"The Barvas Estate equates to a large part of the land on Lewis, 33,000 acres, and I wish the community, the trust and all the residents the very best for the future.

"I must say, once again, that it is great that we are seeing more and more of the land being brought back to the people of our islands.”
