The Commonwealth Games baton was carried by the captain of a ferry transporting the Queen’s message across the sea to continue its tour of the Western Isles today.

Captain Iagan Macinnes grasped the opportunity to hold the baton as it sailed on the MV Loch Alainn from Barra to Eriskay on the second day of its tour of the Western Isles.

As one of the most unusual cargoes shipped by the ferry, its impromptu appearance on the bridge surprised Capt Macinnes who hadn’t expected to see the baton at all.

He said: “Its great and very impressive. Its not everyday we get a turn-up like this at seven o’clock in the morning.”

David Cannon, public affairs manager at ferry operator, Caledonian Macbrayne, said they were “absolutely delighted to be playing a part in such a historic event.”
