Commonwealth flag raising event               9/3/14

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will be helping to make history on Monday in a new celebration of Commonwealth Day.

For the first time ever, local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles are taking part in local flag raising events and ceremonies of dedication to mark Commonwealth Day.

The Western Isles event will be held outside the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar offices in Stornoway at 10am led by Comhairle convener, Cllr Norman MacDonald.

Kara Hanlon, our top ranked local swimmer, and Connor Maclean, a top Cross Country runner and member of Stornoway Running and Athletic Club, both of whom are also Young Ambassadors, will assist the convener in the raising of the flag. There will also be a message read out from the Queen. A specially written Commonwealth Affirmation will be read out by five Youth Legacy Ambassadors from the Nicolson Institute; Tearlach Barden, Eleanor Smith, Sarah Macleod, Peter Macdonald and John Maciver.

Cllr Norman MacDonald said: “I am delighted that we have been offered the opportunity to participate in this historic moment to dedicate Commonwealth Day and all that the Commonwealth represents. We are delighted that Glasgow will host the games this summer and will be doing our best to highlight the opportunities for spectators to visit our special islands throughout the Western Isles, before or after attending the games.”
