Strikes planned this month across Scotland’s colleges were suspended in an attempt to offer the employers’ body another opportunity to return to the negotiating table.

However, there have been no further talks in the interim despite the efforts of Scottish Government to broker a dialogue.

The union will meet on Wednesday to plan its next campaign of action.

Chris Greenshields of Unison Scotland said: “The Scottish Government and the Employers’ Association have a fundamental choice here on whether to do the right thing, or to further alienate and demoralise half the staff in Scotland’s colleges.

“Support staff are the backbone of Scotland’s colleges and don’t deserve to be treated as second-class citizens.”

Shona Struthers, chief executive of the Colleges Scotland Employers’ Association, said: “It is extremely disappointing that Unison members have voted to reject the latest pay offer.

“The employers have offered a good package which would have ensured that all staff across the sector were receiving at least 2.5% over two years, with those below £22,000 receiving an increase of £800. This offer exceeds public sector pay.

“We look forward to meeting with the trade unions to discuss how we now progress.”

College strike action set to resume

More disruption looms for the Lews Castle College after negotiations for college support workers across Scotland failed to find agreement.

College support staff working in administration, catering, cleaning, advisors, security, technicians and others are calling for fair wages with lecturing colleagues who received a £450 flat rate rise in May.

Workers previously voted by 89% to 11% to reject the last offer from the employers.

Trade union Unison has written to the employers’ association, Colleges Scotland, to urge a fair negotiated settlement to the long running dispute.
