Two islanders had a fortunate escape after trying to rescue a dog which fell down cliffs in Lewis.

Both men ended up in the sea at Swordale, Point, but had difficulty in getting back up to the top around 12.20pm on Thursday.

One person managed to climb up and called 999.

A number of coastguards cliff rescue teams attended the scene.

Stornoway lifeboat and the coastguard helicopter were also tasked to the emergency.

One casualty was suffering from hypothermia and was flown by rescue helicopter to the Stornoway hospital.

The second was checked over by paramedics and taken home by coastguard personnel.

The dog did not survive and was retrieved by a coastguard who used rope access to descend the cliff.
