Trial hears claim that accused talked about Liam’s death        23/5/13

A police detective told a murder trial this afternoon hat a cell-mate of one of the accused, Stefan Millar, had spoken about Liam Aitchison’s death.

Inverness-based detective constable James Morrison, 51, said he interviewed Dominic Long about his claim that Stefan Millar told him about the killing while they shared a cell in Porterfield Prison in Inverness in 2011.

Johnathan Mackinnon and Stefan Millar, deny murdering Liam Aitchison in a derelict house in Steinish, Lewis, in November 2011.

It is alleged he was hit on the head and body with a knife and bottle and was kicked and stamped on his head.

DC  James Morrison relayed to the court  that Dominic Long said in August 2012 that Millar claimed that Mackinnon said he was “going to kill him (Liam) for stealing his Rabanne (aftershave).”

Later, they went up to a barn and “Stefan then said he bottled the boy and Jonny had stabbed him. He said he had hit him on the head with a bottle,” recounted the police officer from the cell-mate’s interview.

He said the pair had met in “basically a holding cell” and they asked each other about “why are you here?”

Dominic Long stated: “Stefan said “alleged murder” and had added “innocent until proven guilty,” Mr Morrison told the court.

The witness said Mr Long “came across as a genuine person. He just relayed events of his time with Stefan Millar.” He said Mr Long had no great problem in recalling events.

Defence lawyer Frances McMenamin QC asked if Mr Morrison was aware Dominic Long had drug abuse problems, longstanding ADHD or was on a detox programme about that time.

The police officer said he wasn’t.

The witness agreed there was nothing in the cell-mate’s statement about Stefan Millar stabbing Liam Aitchison.

The trial, before judge Lord Kinclaven, continues.
