► Lewis Presbytery votes against gay ministers

Both Church of Scotland presbyteries in the Western Isles have opposed permitting gay ministers to be appointed.

The national church has confirmed the final figures showing how presbyteries voted over the proposal on gay ordination.

The majority backed the proposal to allow kirk sessions the possibility of allowing ministers and deacons who are in a civil partnership to apply for vacant charges.

The final decision will be made at this year’s General Assembly in May.

All 19 representatives from churches on Lewis opposed the move.

One person out of the nine representatives on Uist Presbytery - which includes Harris, North Uist and Benbecula churches - voted in favour.

The Church of Scotland in Barra and South Uist are not counted in the Western isles figures as they come under the remit of Argyll Presbytery. Some 43 individuals out of 63 people in Argyll backed gay ministers.

The final decision will be made at this year’s General Assembly in May.

Across Scotland, some 32 presbyteries voted in favour. There were 13 against.

1391 individuals voted in favour and 1153 against which equates to 54.6% for gay pastors with 45.4% opposed.
