Sir,

The Rev J Colin Caskie insists that his church in Tarbert is not in serious decline (The flame still burns, 24 Nov) and insists that “recent moves by the General Assembly to change attitudes to human sexuality” do not meet with the agreement of his congregation.

I wasn’t aware the General Assembly could wield such power.

Attitudes to human sexuality are changing through ground-breaking scientific research and a growing humanity that moves towards a more equitable, fairer and compassionate world view.

The path is made clear by the secularisation of Scotland which respects freedom for and freedom from religion.

And let me make it clear: Any decline in church numbers has not been brought about by the supposed murderous ambitions of secularists; but a slow and painful suicide executed by the church itself as it remains stubbornly intransigent and resolute against a changing and enlightened world in the sphere of human sexuality.
